Mother backs charity marathon challenge

From the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, first published Wednesday 7th Aug 2002.

THE mother of a five-year-old cystic fibrosis sufferer is supporting a marathon man who will tackle the Great North Run to raise money for research into the disease.

Sarah Redfearn, a teacher at Blackburn's Pleckgate High School, praised David Lewis for helping the charity after her son Sam was born with the disease.

David, 52, of Nelson, is hoping to raise at least £1,000 and has run the London Marathon twice.

He said: "I have raised more than £6,500 for charity before so I would expect to raise a minimum of £1,000.

"I have known Ian and Sarah Redfearn for a long time since before Sam was born so I thought it would be nice to raise money for cystic fibrosis research."

The Great North Run will take place on October 6 from Newcastle to South Shields.

Sarah said: "I think it's a great idea of David's. We have supported him in the other marathons he has done for charity. As soon as they make a break through on how to deal with cystic fibrosis it could help Sam so any extra money can only help. We will be encouraging him."
