Assault after wedding

From the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, first published Wednesday 7th Aug 2002.

A MAN who had attended a wedding at a seaside resort ended up being arrested by police on the prom after he had been involved in a fight.

Preston Crown Court was told that Christopher Craig was the only person to face the music and end up in court following an incident which took place at the Claremont Hotel, Blackpool, in January 2001.

Simon Newell, defending, told the court police soon spotted Craig as he was the only person on the prom wearing a morning suit.

Craig, of Delph Lane, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to assaulting Ian Veevers occasioning him actual bodily harm on January 27, 2001.

He was sentenced to a 100-hour community punishment order with £450 costs and ordered to pay Mr Veevers £500 compensation.

The court heard Mr Veevers was at a birthday celebration in an adjoining suite at the same time as the wedding Craig was attending.

A fight broke out with others involved and Craig had not inflicted the first blow. He was not the sole cause of all of the injuries.

Mr Veevers sustained a fractured nose and faces further corrective surgery. He also sustained cuts to his face which needed stitches and grazes.

Mr Newell told the court the injuries were unpleasant but Craig was not the prime mover. He had thrown punches initially in self-defence and then broke away from the fight. He then left the premises and was arrested on the prom. He was the only person to be arrested.
