WHEN Mrs Susan Diggle, of Crosby Road, Bolton, sent me a photocopy of a newspaper cutting including this picture of her late father Cliff Coward working on a roof beam at the restoration of Hall i'th' Wood, asking if it was possible to print it, the photocopy standard was not good enough for reproduction. And she added: 'I am not sure when the picture was taken, or when it was printed, but your archives may tell you.' Well, that could have been a very tall order; in the 1960s many old photographs from our library at the Evening News were thrown away because of space problems. But hey, how lucky can you get . . . I found the original of this one, and here it is. The photograph of children from Ringley School watching Mr Coward at work with an adze appeared in 1968, and the method of cutting the new beams was the same as used for the original beams way back in the 15th century.   more...
