SINGLES

VAN MORRISON: Back On Top (Virgin/Pointblank) - Music's answer to Father Jack is back with a soulful, doleful look at life, still sounding like he writes songs on a bar stool. Not the upbeat jig that was his last single Precious Time, the lyrics here have a bitter ring despite the relaxing rhythm. A familiar mix of sax, harmonica and keyboards that will probably miss the charts. (6/10) IM  more...

A family search

My grandparents, Charles and Agnes Winch (nee Twist), were born in Crewe in 1883 and were married at St Gregory the Great RC Church, Farnworth, in 1907. They then spent about seven years in India. After returning to England in 1921 and spending some time in the Lake District, they returned to Hazel Grove in Farnworth. In 1924, they migrated to Australia with their children - Joe, Eileen, Dick and Kathleen. My mother, Agnes, was born in Australia in 1925.  more...

Have you set a precedent?

I AM not sure, but I think your newspaper has set a precedent for itself by showing the crumpled front wing, bumper and bezel of the Rolls Shadowrecently. Ouch! £3,500 repair cost there? I am more than mildly surprised you have shown the damage. Certainly, up until 15-20 years ago, you would not have been allowed to re-print a damaged Rolls or Bentley, by order. The only other photograph of the vehicle I have seen damaged was in a national newspaper a few years ago when the late Leslie Crowther flipped his Rolls over a motorway embankment.  more...

The grandmother-of-four says Sir Cliff is her life and charting his every move as a dedicated fan is her way of keeping herself young.  more...

Vote on theatre issue

I am at a loss to understand the rationale behind these letters about the Octagon. It strikes me as having all the appearance of a concerted effort to influence things in one direction (known in theatrical terms as a claque, I believe) and I, for one, strongly object to letters, from as far away as London, telling Bolton how to allocate its hard earned resources.  more...
